Family Betulaceae S.F. Gray – Birch Family

Genus Alnus Mill. – Alder.

  • Alnus incana (L.) Moench s. l. – Grey Alder, Speckled Alder - Bush, very rare - Tree. Wet and marshy forests, banks of forest lakes and brooks, sometimes seashore wet rocks; often. The Northern form of grey alder is regarded as a special species or subspecies – A. kolaënsis Orlova = A. incana subsp. kolaënsis (Orlova) Á. et D. Löve, and part of the samples from the Kindo peninsula meet the criteria of this form.

Genus Betula L. – Birch

  • Betula nana L. – Dwarf Birch - Bush. Marshy forests, bogs; common.
  • Betula pendula Roth (B. verrucosa Ehrh.) – Silver Birch - Tree. On rocks, stone runs, along the WSBS power line swath; quite often, but considerably less often than Downy Birch (B. pubescens).
  • Betula pubescens Ehrh. (B. concinna Gunnarss., B. czerepanovii Orlova, B. subarctica Orlova, B. tortuosa auct.) – Downy Birch, White Birch, European White Birch, Hairy Birch - Tree, sometimes crooked. Forms pure forests or grows in admixture with in forests; common. Hybridizes with B. nana.
